Law and Order Issues in the 21st Century
18–19 April 2008 Banco Law Courts, Brisbane, Qld, Australia
On Friday 18 and Saturday 19 April, the Queensland Law Society will host a major forum with the theme, Law and Order Issues in the 21st Century
Quite deliberately, it will be closed to the media and there will not be any record of what will be very frank discussions – we want everybody to speak freely and without prejudice in a frank exchange of views on complex and often divisive issues without any distraction. Sessions over the intensive two days will include community corrections and sentencing, streamlining the criminal justice system – processes, resourcing and developments in court management, developments in case management – comparative NSW and Qld perspectives, emerging technologies in the criminal justice system, potential miscarriages of justice, policing and the interface with the criminal justice system – federal and state perspectives, emerging issues in restorative justice and Australian and international perspectives on the death penalty.
Beginning with an opening address by Chief Justice Paul de Jersey, confirmed contributors already include the President of the Court of Appeal, the Chief Judge of the District Court, the Chief Magistrate, the Queensland and New South Wales Directors of Public Prosecutions, the Chair of the Crime and Misconduct Commission, the Queensland Police Commissioner, the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, the Queensland Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport, the President of the Law Council of Australia, The CEO of Legal Aid Queensland, the Senior Director, Forensic and Scientific Services at Queensland Health, retired Justice Martin Moynihan and Professor Geraldine Mackenzie, the Head of the University of Southern Queensland Law School.
It is a unique opportunity to talk directly with major decision makers and to discuss and debate actively with them on critical issues that concern us all.
Be a part of history, let your opinion be heard and make your mark where it really counts.
