26 - 29 September 2010 Honolulu
The strength of Hawai‘i child protection programs and initiatives has been the collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of our efforts. Our medical profession has been a leader in the identification of child abuse and neglect, including child sexual abuse, and the development of prevention programs. Together with our nursing profession, we have developed strong public health nursing and other outreach nursing services that have assisted high risk families in addressing the health care needs of their children. Our psychological professionals have been instrumental in identifying the psychological risk factors for abuse, neglect and child sexual abuse and have developed psychological assessment and treatment protocols to address the needs of families from various cultures. The social work field has been critical in developing social policies that address the needs of families from various cultures and has developed social programs that strengthen families and lower the risk for child maltreatment. Hawai‘i has also been blessed with a legislative and judiciary branch that have been very sensitive to the needs of families, passing legislation aimed toward protecting children and strengthening families. Through the collaboration of our consortium, we have developed exceptional educational and training programs in the area of child maltreatment and have developed child maltreatment specialty training with the Hawai‘i Pediatric Residency Training Program, Graduate Nursing Programs, Psychology Clinical Internships, Psychology Post-Doctoral Residencies and Fellowships and Social Work Practicums/Internships. Our consortium has also hosted many local and national conferences in the area of the identification, treatment and prevention of child maltreatment.
